The Joy of Small Things

Bookish readers will know that last month, Arundhati Roy (author of The God of Small Things) published her first memoir, and the paperback of Nigel Slater’s A Thousand Feasts was released. Slater’s book celebrates the “little joys illuminating an increasingly darkening world” – moments which can “feed the soul”.

In the spirit of small things, I’ve compiled a short list of joyful moments to embrace and look forward to as autumn draws in.

  1. Putting on preheated clothes from the radiator
  2. Drinking a cup of tea when you really fancy it
  3. Resting your feet in a warm, soapy foot bath
  4. Returning parcels in InPost lockers
  5. The scent of & Other Stories Sicilian Sunrise hand cream
  6. Finishing a book not long after you’ve started it
  7. Reading a book with such enjoyment that all else ceases to exist
  8. Catching the train or bus a minute before it departs
  9. Wearing cashmere socks in bed
  10. The smell of a loved one’s hair
